Three Gulfs Sailing Week: the sailing event will take place in Sorrento

The Famous Rolex Capri Sailing Week, from next year will be presented as Three Gulfs Sailing Week. Baptized with a new name, the competition will be remaining in the same usual area, between the bay of Naples, Salerno, and Gaeta, running 150 miles. This is the most important event of the year for sailing lovers and expert sailors.

The Location will be the bay of Naples, Italy, on west Mediterranean, and the homeport will be Sorrento, instead of Capri (further details about the changebelow in the article) always sponsored by brand Rolex, as official timepiece of the event.

The event

Thanks to Circolo Remo and to Vela Italia, together with the Italian Sailing Foundation (FIV) and thanks to many local sailing clubs and local sponsors, the Three gulfs sailing week will offer this year to his lucky visitors a great show at open sea, between 14th and 22nd May 2022,

This year the races will be the followings:

• The Three Gulfs Race
• The Maxi European Championship
• The ORC Mediterranean Championship, from 19th May 2022.
• The Thyrrenian National Championship.
   

The historical 3 gulfs race

The Three Gulfs race is now at the 67th edition and has changed the name to Three Gulfs Sailing Week (former Rolex Capri Sailing Week).
Since 1954 different sailing competed in the Mediterranean Sea
 and many important brands, such as Tim, Telecom, Loro Piana and Ermenegildo Zegna have related to the event, together with Rolex, the main sponsor.

The Maxi European Championship

The three Gulfs Sailing week 2022 is The Maxi European Championship and it will take place between the 14th to the 22nd. of May. The event is Reserved to the Mini Maxi yacht category and yacht Maxi, respectively between 18-24 meters and 24-30meters, with IRC came rating system.

Those amazing boats will be hosted at Marina Piccola in Sorrento
 

The ORC Mediterranean Championship

The ORC Mediterranean Championship, also known as “Mediterraneo ORC”
is reserved to ORC vessels (Offshore Racing Council), which is the international organizer of many open sea races, and it will set the headquarter in Sorrento this year.
Those yachts will be challenging between 19th and 21st of May, running a battlefield of 150 miles, which is the historical Three Gulfs Race route.
At the end of the competition, the awards will be assigned with a special ceremony in the city of Sorrento.

The ORC Mediterranean Championship event will take place just few weeks before the world ORC Championship, in Porto Cervo, on the norther side of Sardinia, in June this year. A very special opportunity to participate to both ORC championships.

News of the 2022 edition

The most important news for the 2022 edition is the new headquarter, based in Sorrento for the first time, due to the very high number of participants.
More than 150 yachts, (almost 50 are new entry racers) will participate to the races of the 2022 edition

In 2021 the edition has been longer than usual, to let everybody enjoy the race, including the participant from 2020, when the competition was cancelled due to the global pandemic.

In a recent interview, the President of Circolo Remo e Vela, Roberto Mottola, active partner of the event expressed his gratitude to Rolex, the main sponsor, The IMA and ORC association that every year put such an important assignment to the Vela circuit and to the Major of Sorrento for opening the door of the city to the event.
The larger capacity of the port of Sorrento and surrounding facilities will be an important asset to support the success of the event.

Program and route of the event

We have just introduced the main news of the 2022 edition and we will now share few little things about the new spirit of the race, the participants and their routes.

On the 14th of May 2022 the first sailing will take place, departing from Santa Lucia port, the famous harbor attached to Castell dell’ Ovo in Naples, overtaking the isles of Ischia and Procida, then on the way to Ventotene and Ponza and then following Li Galli isles, the private archipelago located just in front of Positano, on the Amalfi Coast, to cross the finish line in Capri, and return in Sorrento seaport.

The Classic yachts this year will set a new battlefield, sailing directly to Capri, after overcoming the isle of Ventotene in the bay of Gaeta.
